Don’t Do What Others Do-Approach Your Job Search Your Way

“In my 15 years of HR career, I have realized one thing-95% of people do the same thing in their job search. For example, they apply for jobs on the Job Apps or Websites using ‘one-click apply’ and play the waiting game. I don’t say they do not get jobs, but the gestation period is quite extended. One-click apply means the same Cover letter and CV for different Job requirements for multiple companies.”

So, the question is, what needs to be done differently to avoid this situation?

Here are some ways to use a personalized approach. Please do not take my word for it. Try it out yourself to experience the difference.

  • First and foremost, get rid of the ‘one-click apply’ option. It is not feasible. Playing the waiting game in today’s competitive job market is not advisable.
  • Optimizing your CV for hiring managers and resume screeners is the call of the hour. Use professional CV writing services to stand out. Do not follow the ‘All jobs-one CV’ approach. It can be disastrous.
  • Permanently attach a customized cover letter for each job application. Avoid using the one-cover letter-for-all-jobs approach.
  • Add the right keywords to your resume for each job you apply. Add relevant keywords picked up from job descriptions to pass through the Application Tracking System.
  • If you are using LinkedIn to apply, ensure your LinkedIn profile has a professional look and feel.
  • A good idea is to send a note to the hiring managers after you apply for the job. This helps keep you at the top of their minds.
  • Send the hiring manager samples of you already doing the job. For example, if you’re applying for a sales role, send them a list of a few prospects and how to target them. If you’re applying for a marketing role, write up a marketing strategy they should try.
  • If you are a graduate looking for your first job, refer to the graduate resume guides for better direction. It will help you get through to your first job.
  • If you are working on your CV, have it checked by a professional for any tiny errors that could cause your resume to be rejected even before it is well considered?

Considering the above points in your job search could get you your desired job faster than expected.

One important thing to understand is that companies receive far more applications than anticipated for every job posting today. Most companies use the Application Tracking System to process job applications for human consideration. To avoid rejection even before consideration, one could be better than many others in terms of skills and qualifications; a proper job search process should be the approach.
