For many years, there have been many debates and research about male vs. female bosses in the Corporate World. There needs to be concrete findings or outcomes on who is better. The Male domination in many industries has weaned. Females have proved equal to their male counterparts, if not better.
Many have pointed out that Female Bosses are better, but no substantial finding verifies this.
Let us look at some of the pointers of Gender and Leadership:
Females Engage Their Subordinates Better:
Employees are subject to domination from other colleagues. Still, no data proves dominance comes from a male or female employer. Research studies, however, show that females engage their subordinates better than males, which is why many people prefer to work for or under female bosses.
Multi-tasking Abilities:
By their very nature, females are usually better than males when multi-tasking. Why is this so? Females, by default, multi-task, period. For centuries, females have compartmentalized their lives into many roles: career woman, mother, sister, friend, girlfriend, wife, and partner.
Females try to perform their roles to the best of their capabilities, to the point of being a superwoman. Most may argue that many females do it wonderfully, and some may remark that stringent timelines and the ability to improvise are critical in fulfilling these roles.
Of course, some roles are prioritized over others. Yet, all these roles have one thing in common. It allows females to perform to the best of their superwoman capacities.
Most people say that the superwoman’s idea is toxic, a myth, etc. Let’s look at an example to explain the superwoman adage. My friend’s wife, Rachel, is a housewife and a mother to ten-year-old Sean. Once she felt the need, she returned to work as a Lab Assistant. She had a beautiful, well-run house. Everything seemed to fall into place: lab work, after-work activities, attending husband’s corporate dinners, going to fitness classes, family holidays, and volunteer work teaching kids with autism. She was a master of compartmentalisation or multi-tasking, which was relatively essential to her then.
The Female Boss-A Role Model:
Some may disagree that a female is a better Manager than a male. However, most female entrepreneurs have influenced others and become role models to several people. Many young people have experienced how females work and their work style. They admire such females, who have become their role models. The influence and admiration of female bosses make their roles more vital than those of male bosses.
Female Boss Traits:
In today’s corporate world, diversity has created more opportunities for females. Females now enjoy more comfortable positions than males, and work-related opportunities for females are everywhere.
Being in a leadership position doesn’t require gender differentiation. What it needs is knowledge, firmness, communication skills, and empathy.
Some studies suggest that employees, colleagues, and students prefer female bosses to male employers in leadership positions.
Male bosses tend to be more sparing about micromanagement. They give their colleagues and employees space to deliver more efficient work.
Most female bosses ensure that their employees, colleagues, or students work according to their deadlines. However, male bosses are preferred over female bosses in terms of micromanagement.
Money Matters more to male bosses than to female bosses. Male bosses ensure the company earns money so that they are compensated well. Thus, they pressure their employees to work better daily. It is not that female bosses do not care about the company’s earnings, but their male counterparts still wish to be paid more.
It is a common trait in male bosses that they are not very good at communicating. They choose not to discuss any differences with their employees. They are averse to confrontation, even if the issues on hand might be getting serious. On the contrary, a female boss communicates with the employees. They discuss the problems at hand and try to find solutions straight away. When talking about their problems, employees prefer a female boss. Females have more patience to listen.
A Female boss is more protective of employees and colleagues. She tends to protect her employees, colleagues, and the business more. Males are known to be less protective, and hence, female bosses are preferred.
Office-related problems exist in most organizations. A male or a female boss’s prerogative is to handle office-related issues responsibly. In most cases, it is said that female employers or bosses make a mountain out of a molehill! They tend to get over-involved and create a big issue out of some small things. Here, employees or colleagues prefer a male boss.
Female bosses share an appreciation for performance appraisal, giving credit somewhat to their team or everyone involved in a successful project. With Male bosses, they want most of the gratitude and do not care much to share the applauses. They are more concerned with highlighting their achievements first.
Conclusion
There could be several differences between a male and a female boss. In this blog, we wanted to discuss each gender’s good qualities and how we can work together. We must go through our working lives and feel comfortable with them. How good a female or male boss is relies on how they help us grow. The matter here is what we learn from different bosses and how to improve our careers.
Male Boss or Female Boss, the debate continues 🙂
